Statement as of 2:13 PM MDT on May 21, 2012 |
... Red flag warning in effect from 11 am to 10 PM MDT Wednesday due to strong winds and low humidity...
The National Weather Service in El Paso TX/Santa Teresa has issued a red flag warning... which is in effect Wednesday from 11 am to 10 PM MDT.
* Affected area: south-central New Mexico including fire weather zones 112 and 113.
* Timing: Wednesday from 11 am to 10 PM MDT.
* Wind: west-southwest winds 30 to 35 mph at the 20-foot level with gusts 45 to 55 mph.
* Humidity: minimum rh 5 to 8 percent area-wide.
* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will create extreme fire growth potential.
